The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) in Quang Tri, which will take over, manage and operate the air traffic control tower once the airport enters service. Representatives of the project owner, contractors, supervision consultants and the Project Management Board were also in attendance.

The milestone makes the air traffic control tower the tenth component of the project to complete structural construction. It marks the beginning of the finishing and specialized equipment installation stage while demonstrating that the project remains on schedule.

Often described as the “brain” coordinating all flight operations, the air traffic control tower is one of the airport’s most critical components. It will play a central role in ensuring safety and coordinating all operational activities once the airport enters service.

The tower comprises 11 storeys and a rooftop level. Its top-floor slab reaches an elevation of 44.34 metres, while the structure’s highest point stands at 51.73 metres. The design meets stringent requirements for visibility, flight operations management and the installation of specialized air traffic control systems. The tower also entails particularly demanding structural, architectural and construction-engineering requirements.

For these reasons, the project owner and contractors prioritized resources for this critical component from the early stages of construction. Despite harsh weather, complex geological conditions and schedule pressures, engineers and workers maintained round-the-clock construction efforts to complete the structure as planned, creating an important foundation for the synchronized operation of the airport’s systems when it officially enters service.

Quang Tri Airport is being developed under the public-private partnership model. Construction began in July 2024, with total investment exceeding VND 5.8 trillion.

The project’s planning classification was recently upgraded from Code 4C to Code 4E, enabling the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350. The upgrade will expand the airport’s operational capacity and create greater room for long-term development.

Alongside the completion of structural construction on the air traffic control tower, work is also being accelerated across several other critical components.

At the passenger terminal, the main structural works have been substantially completed. Internal and external plastering, installation of the steel roof structure, auxiliary works and technical infrastructure are now being carried out concurrently.

The runway has been completed. For the taxiway and airfield drainage system, the removal of organic soil, dredging, subgrade excavation and compaction have also been completed in accordance with technical requirements.

The completion of the air traffic control tower’s structural works, as construction accelerates simultaneously across the project’s other key components, further demonstrates the determination of the investor consortium and construction contractors to deliver Quang Tri Airport on schedule.

The project is steadily advancing towards its goal of establishing a modern airport that will generate new momentum for socioeconomic development in Quang Tri Province and Vietnam’s North Central region.
